This is a short project - 4 weeks, which focuses on designing & making skills in textiles and builds on skills acquired in Year 7.
Design Brief
You are going to design a new special edition "Ugly Doll". you will need to characterise it after someone famous or someone special, you will need to create a name for your ugly doll and your design must be manufacturable, both as a one off product and for batch production.
Research
Ugly Dolls - there are different brands and manufactures of Ugly Dolls, conduct an investigation into this type of products and produce a research board of your findings.
Your research board should address the following:
Influences for this type of doll, (here is a clue - Tim Burton)
Who manufactures the "Ugly Doll" - and what is the story?
Materials, construction and assembly
Use the following template for your research and investigation:
Design four different Ugly Dolls, using the A4 design ideas sheet below. Consider your research as you design you Ugly Doll, bold shapes, bright bold colours, label and outline your design and give each design a unique name.
Draw your chosen design onto the A4 design sheet. Designing the pattern pieces draw full size each of the pattern pieces accurately using the A4 design grid below, add 1.5cm seam allowance around your main pattern pieces.
Cut your pattern pieces out carefully using paper scissors.
Making your prototype
Place your pattern pieces onto the dipryl and pin them securly before cutting them out with fabric shears. Assemble it carefully, take photos of each stage and write an instruction guide. Are you happy with the design are there any minor adjustments you need to make take a photo od your assembled doll, draw and label any modifications.
If you modifications are major redesigns you may need to make anew pattern and a new prototype.
Making your final Ugly Doll
Place your pattern pieces onto your different fabric pieces and pin them securly before cutting them out with fabric shears. Before assembly of the main body add any establishment and decorative features. Assemble it carefully adding seam allowances to fabrics which fray. Leave an opening in the side under an arm or leg so that you can stuff it with polyester toy stuffing.
Take photos of each stage and write an instruction guide using your previous guide to help you, remember to add in any health and safety notes.
Template for instruction guide:
Testing & Evaluation
Conduct the following tests, you will need to describe and illustrate how you have conducted these tests and why?
Then evaluate your final product against the specification questions. Finally evaluate the assembly instruction guide that you wrote.
Test 1
Visual test - Are all the seams sewn securely so the stuffing does not fall out?
Test 2
Tactile test - Are all the embellishments sewn on securely?
Test 3
Client test - What is the customers opinion about your ugly doll?
Form
Have you made an aesthetically pleasing "Ugly Doll" and does its name match its form?
Function
Is it decorative or a toy? Is your ugly doll washable?
User requirement
Is the product suitable for young children?
Budgetary constraints
How much would it cost to make your Ugly doll?
Sustainability
In what way is your ugly doll sustainable?
