Introduction - Kitchen Design

This is short project (3 lessons) looking at the most used room of the house which accommodating a wide range of activities from storage of food and cooking equipment, food preparation and the serving of meals and drinks, washing and cleaning of equipment, laundry and household cleaning, and finally homework and TV room.
The kitchen is often limited in space and careful planning is needed to make sure the solution looks attractive and are functional. It must provide a work space which makes the best use a person's time and energy.

Research

Using your laptops or magazines collect at least 10 images of great kitchen, label and identify key design features that you like. Don't forget to cite the source of your information (add the URL link to the source of the information)

Using the following link http://mydeco.com/rooms/moodboard/ and create an account to make a moodboard about kitchen accessories and fixture and fittings. You may wish to make more than one with different focuses such as chairs, taps etc.

Homework
What are the main features in your kitchen at home? - make a list of them and take a photo for your research report.
What size is your kitchen? - measure it and draw a plan, and mark onto your plan the main fixtures and fittings you would expect to find in a kitchen.
Which materials have been used in you kitchen? - list them, and categorise them into metal, plastic, wood, glass/ceramic, and composites.

You need to use the correct terminology and technical language throughout your project. Define the following terms:

Answer the following questions:
Why do you think it is important to use 3D illustrations to show a client how their kitchen will look?
Would the orthographic views not be enough?
Why have you added colour and finishes to your 3D model?
What are the many advantages of creating a computer generated 3D model over traditional pencil drawn and pen & wash illustrations?
Are there any disadvantages?


Design & Specification

Designing your ideal kitchen - would you double or triple the size of your kitchen.
List all the features, the equipment, storage, fixtures and fittings you would like to see in your kitchen.
Based on all the information gathered above list you design specifications under the following headings:
  • Form (aesthetics)
  • Function
  • User requirement
  • Budgetary constraints
  • Sustainability


Make & Manufacture

Using the link to the Ikea website, make an account and use the Ikea kitchen designer software to design your ideal kitchen.

You must make a presentation (Google) of your kitchen design, showing full orthographic views of your kitchen including dimensions and 3D views of your kitchen (at least 6 good views using the Ikea kitchen designer)

Use the Selected Items to print off the list of kitchen furniture you have placed in your kitchen with a final cost analysis.
What does your kitchen cost?


Testing & Evaluation

Testing - does your kitchen meet your design criteria? - using the headings and statement, give details and visual information (snap-shots and close-ups)
How well does your floor plan fit the the work triangle? - copy your floor plan and draw this on.

How will you evaluate your kitchen design? - consider two different evaluation tools.
Are there any modifications to your kitchen design that you now consider need to be made and why? - illustrate and label them.
