Introduction - Teasmade
Teasmade is a "starter" project for Year 7 and is designed to introduce you to the design technology workshops, and to use its tools and equipment. It is fun to make objects that are fully functional and teasmade is just that. Within 2 sessions you will have experienced the use of a wide range of machinery tools and processes and have a quality product to take home.
During the teasmade project you will learn how to safely use a pedestal drilling machine, a disc sander use PVA to stick timber together and be able to identify a range of hardwoods and softwoods.
Research
Using tools and equipment safely, health & safety in the workshop.
Identify a range of wood including the following:
Pine
Spruce
Red Oak
Ash
Beech
Jarrah
Which of the above listed timber are "hard wood" and which are "soft wood"? What is the difference?
Knowledge & Understanding
In the workshop identify the following health & safety features
around the room:
emergency stop button
safe working areas
safety clothing
eye protection
eye bath
first aid box
fire exits
fire blanket, fire extinguishers
Look at all of the potential hazards in the picture below and rank the
hazards in order of least dangerous through to most dangerous.
You need to indicate why they chose this particular order.
Some of the equipment used in this project, can you list the other tools and equipment you have used?
Download this image and
label the main part of the
disc sander.
You will follow the teachers instructions carefully in order to manufacture the teasmade. You will produce a photo journal or diary of making, recording the step by step the manufacture of your teasmade. You should include details of the tools and materials used, health and safety for each step. Keywords Here are some keywords that you will hear during this project, can you define them:
clamp
vice
sanding block
glass paper
jig
timber
grain
Testing & Evaluation
You will test your finished teasmade, you will need to design three tests and then you should take photos of each of your tests and evaluate the results and findings to your three tests.
Evaluate how the project went, do you now feel confident about working in the workshop? Whilst manufacturing the teasmade - what stage was the most interesting? and which stage did you like least? If you were to make the teasmade again, what would you do differently.
Finally you should ask two other people to also evaluate your finished teasmade.
Record all your results in your design journal or e-Portfolio.
