Follow each of the steps carefully and make up your T-shirt ready for your printing on your design using sublimation printing technique.
1. Lay out the T-shirt, with the right side of the fabric facing you.
2. Place the sleeve, in front of the armhole; then fold in half.
3. Place the folded sleeve onto the shoulder seam; then open it out.
4. Place the first pin into the sleeve at the shoulder seam.
5. Place the second pin into the sleeve at the side seam.
6. Place the third pin into the sleeve half way between the other two pins.
7. Place the next pin half way between the first and third, another between the second and third.
8. And so on until the sleeve is evenly positioned and secured in place.
9. Repeat for the other side of the sleeve.
10. Repeat for the other sleeve.
11. Before sewing the sleeves into position on the machine, thread a needle with contrasting coloured thread, and stitch the sleeves in position using running stitch (up and over) about 10mm long stitch and 10mm gap. This is called tacking or to baste, it is a temporary stitch.
12. Take the pins out and make sure your sleeves are correctly in position and lay smooth and flat before you begin to sew.
13. Place the T-shirt under the needle with the T-shirt on the left of the machine, and the seam you are going to join onto the second line guide of the footplate on the right. Giving your self a seam allowance of 10mm and sew using straight stitch with the stitch length set to 3. Don’t forget to reverse at the start and finish of every seam to ensure it does not come undone.
14. Repeat for the other sleeve, then remove the tacking stitch. (Optional you can use the overlocker to finish off the seam)
15. Place the T-shirt inside out and pin the side and sleeve seams together, starting from under the arm to the bottom on the T-shirt, then from the under-arm to the end of the sleeve. Repeat for the other side.
16. Stitch on the machine using the second line guide for a 10mm seam allowance. Use the overlocker to finish off the seam.
Cut off all the hanging loose threads, and turn your T-shirt out to the right side, and press lightly. Transfer your sublimation printed design on to the T-shirt. Ask your teacher for help.
Extension task: If you have finished, you may decide to give a finishing top stitching to the seams of your T-shirt, like that around the collar and shoulder seam.
Sewing tips: · To turn corners pivot by leaving the needle in the fabric. Lift the presser foot and turn the material in the direction to be stitched · To stitch curves, gentle turn the fabric as the needle passes under the presser foot
