School Closure - Information & Lessons

Year 7, Structures work & tasks below for completion during school closure

In your structures booklet read page 4 and in the spaces draw 3 ‘preliminary design’ ideas for your bridge that meet the specification on page 3.
You must make sure your bridge design goes over the edges of the supports (sides of the river) which is 25 cm. It must be no higher than 18cm. Use your research in girder bridges to help you design your bridge. Add lots of triangulation…but….remember it must not be too heavy!
Good luck.

School Closure - Information & Lessons:

Year 7 Unit 1 Lesson 5 - Anything But the Sandwich

School Closure - Information & Lessons:

Year 8: Electronic Sensing System (Shaky Hand Game). Mr. Atkinson’s class 8.5 and Ms. Czirok’s class 8.7 ONLY

1. Look at the picture on page 2 of your work booklet. It shows an unfinished shaky hand game.

2. Complete the task on page 5 of your work booklet (designing the back part of your shaky hand game). This is the wooden background part.

3. Make sure that your diagrams are carefully coloured and annotated (labeled). Make sure that you have included the wire shape.

4. If you finish this, you can do the task on page 3. See what you can find out about ‘thyristors’. This link will help you to get started:

http://www.design-technology.info/electronics/page6.htm

This is one of the electronic parts of your game. If you have your work booklet, you can present your research on this page. If not, you can bring your work to school already printed or as a soft copy. You can print it out and stick it on the page in your next lesson. Remember to add references to say where you go the information from.

Year 8: About time… (Clock project). Miss. Harvey’s classes 8.2, 8.4 and 8.6 ONLY.

If you have just finished your work on Health and Safety, then you can start the work for the Clock project. You might want to have a look at the booklet and glance through it before you try the tasks below.

1. Do the task on page 3 of your work booklet. You may have started this already, but please make sure that is definitely finished before your next lesson. Follow the instruction carefully; your ideas must be neatly drawn, carefully coloured and annotated (labeled). We would like your ideas to be as creative as possible.

2. Next, do the task on page 4. Remember that these designs are for the numbers only, not the whole clock.

3. Finish the homework task on page 4. Ask 20 people to chose their favourite design from your ideas and keep a tally chart in the table provided.

4. Bring this with you to your next lesson.

Year 8: Trophy Project.

Task 1:
Look in the booklet for the ‘knowledge and understanding homework’, Metals from rocks, please complete the tasks listed.
Task 2:
If you have not yet completed the ‘research2, brainstorming homework’ on page 4, please follow the instructions to complete the task.
If you have already completed the research brainstorming homework(above), then follow the instructions and complete ‘design ideas’ on page 5.
Good luck.

Year 8 FT Unit 1 Lesson 5 - Introduction to Desserts

School Closure - Information & Lessons:

Year 9: Electronics (mini amp). Mr. Ford’s class 9.2 and Mr. Atkinson’s classes 9.3 and 9.6.

1. Look at page 10 of your work booklet. It is about soldering. You did this when you made your shaky hand game in Year 8. You need to make a comic strip which explains how to solder safely.
2.
You can find lots of information to help you on this Wiki space. Find the Year 9 D&T link then look for the “Electronics – Mini Speakers” buttons. They explain the project in more detail. The buttons 9.4-9.6 have examples of Safe Soldering cartoons for you to look at.
3.
If you want to, you can visit
**www.pixton.com** to help you do this. You can sign up for your own free account and use their software to produce cool cartoons.
4. If you don’t want to do this, you can use software of your own choice or draw the cartoon yourself.
5.
Remember to explain the following important things: You must wear goggles, you must be careful not to touch the hot part of the soldering iron, you must put up a sign to tell others that the soldering iron is hot, you must make sure the electrical cable does not melt.

6. You can then complete the task on page 11. All the instructions are at the top of the page.

Year 9: Pewter Project
Complete your research on possible shapes or themes for your pewter jewelery project. Follow instructions on page 4 and start to sketch ideas for your jewellery. Remember to label all your ideas. Good quality neat sketching is required.
If you have completed the task above look at page 5, and start to develop (use your first or initial ideas and change them a bit until you have a good final idea you want to make). You should pick 1 of your first ideas and then sketch it 3 times changing it a little bit each time. Add notes underneath to say which one you will be going to make. Make sure your sketches are neat and well presented.

Play the animoto below....

Please view the presentation below which shows a range of examples of the Y10 Resistant Materials metal Padlock project. This project involves creating a padlock from a blank of aluminium which is accurately drilled and milled. The hasp is made from mild steel formed in a jig and threaded. The nut is brass which is turned and knurled (textured) on the centre lathe and then threaded. The whole product has to be accurate and attractive, the quality of work below illustrates good attention to detail and a high level of pride int the project.

The video below shows the padlock in use (one handed) and all its component parts

Below is a sketchup image of the aluminium blank with dimensions

scale_sketch_of_padlock_blank.jpg

Below is a slide show illustrating the production stages of the padlock step by step.

The video below shows the use of a bending jig. You will use this to create the hasp of the padlock. The jig means you can produce the same bend radius over and over again.

You will be using a centre lathe, a side view is shown below, you should know the names of the parts.

annotated_picture_of_lathe.jpg

The video below shows the lathe skills you will be using to face off, centre drill, knurl and part.

Evaluation skills for the padlock project are highlighted in the slide show below.

Year 11 Food Technology. Mr. Ford’s class.

I am very sorry that you will not be able to do your food practical this week. We will do it on Wednesday next week (16th September) exactly as planned. You do not need to re-order your ingredients. Please do remember to bring your additional ingredients from home.

Please do the following work at home:

Make sure that you have prepared the Development of Ideas sheets for the first three ideas exactly as we discussed in the lesson. This sheet should have an introduction and show these things: Ingredients, quantities and cost, Method, time plan (vital), equipment list. Remember that when you have done the practical, you will add in photographs of your work and also include you evaluation (sensory test, comparison to specification and summary). Leave space for these items.

You now have plenty of time to get this done. Remember that you have four to do in total. If you can get all four done, that would be great, but I do expect three to be ready when you come back on September 16th. Remember to use the information on this Wikispace to help you and email me if you have any questions: tf@shatincollege.edu.hk

Work hard!

School Closure - Information & Lessons:

Year 13 Food Technology: Mr. Ford & Mrs. Sutton’s group.

Higher only (Mr. Ford):
Last week, we started to look at topic A12: Food Security. We covered the first five pages of the booklet and your homework was to find two research samples to go into the task on pages 5 and 6. Please make sure that this is done. The aim is that each article should evaluate progress to achieving MDG Goal 1. It would be excellent if you can find an optimistic article and a pessimistic one to explore the range of viewpoints. Be ready to talk about these in our next lesson.
Next, read pages 7-10 and complete the task on these pages. All the support information you need is posted on this Wiki space.
Email me if you have any questions:
tf@shatincollege.edu.hk
Standard (Ms. Sutton):
You will need your Topic A4 booklets; ‘Food Spoilage and Preservation’ and your text books ‘Food Technology in Action’. You can also refer to the web site resources listed at the top of page 4.
1.
Read pages 4 to 7.
2.
Produce a table which summarises the methods of food preservation. It should contain information about the times involved, temperatures, key aspects of each method and a suitable example.
3.
You should also devote as much time as you can to the development of your project.
Please bring your tables in soft copy to your first lesson back with me on Wednesday 18th September, period 4.
